REAL WEDDING // Lauren + Chris // Pastel rustic barn wedding

Today I’m excited to share Lauren + Chris’ pastel, rustic wedding at Kingscote Barn, thanks to Charlotte’s photos from Bristol Contemporary Photography. Lauren had her heart set on a rustic, barn wedding from the start, and I think you’ll agree from the photos that they achieved this beautifully!

Lauren + Chris met at University, and got engaged on their 6 year anniversary at a spa hotel. Chris had made Lauren a photo book and at the end it said “will you marry me?” ♥

For the flowers, Lauren decorated a lot of jars with jute string, burlap and lace. The venue was decorated with a lot of these jam jars, with a variety of pastel colours.

Top Tips for getting married on a hot day

Emerald & Jade Flowers // Bristol Wedding Florist // Top Tips for getting married on a hot day

If you’re getting married on a hot day like we’re having today, you’re going to want to read my top tips on how to cope with the heat!

We all wish for a sunny day when we get married, hoping our guests will be able to enjoy the venue’s grounds, and that photos can be taken outside after the ceremony and throughout the day. The weather was one of the main deciding factors when my husband and I were deciding on which country to get married in. As I’m from France, and my parents still live there, we knew that we had a better chance of having good weather if we got married there (amongst other reasons I must say). Good weather, we did get, a whole 36 degrees of beautiful hot sunshine! Needless to say, it was a pretty hot day, but knowing the vast majority of our guests were little English roses, we had planned a few things to help everyone cope with the heat…

Fans

We weren’t going to do favours for our wedding, but I did get some fans for our guests, just in case they were a little hot on the day. I got some sandalwood fans like these ones, and when you look at our wedding video, I love how everyone has one on full swing at the beginning!

So fans are definitely one of my top tips!

Emerald & Jade Flowers // Bristol Wedding Florist // Top Tips for getting married on a hot day

Water

Ensure that there is plenty of water available to you and your guests. And then, of course, make sure you drink lots of it! We provided all the drinks to our wedding, and had bought a lot (!!) of water bottles, and these were by far the most popular drink of the day.

If your venue is providing the drinks, they should be able to provide plenty of jugs of water for everyone. Adding mint, lemon or berries are great ways to add flavour whilst keeping it really refreshing still.

Outfits

We made a point of warning guests that it would likely be very warm, so they should wear what they were comfortable in. We did not have a specific dress code for them to follow.

This can still be tricky, especially for men. The women at our wedding were mostly wearing summer dresses, and the kids had shorts and dresses. But the men were all in suits or at the very least trousers and long sleeved shirts (!).

Barry had a 100% cotton, light coloured suit, from Next‘s summer collection. His shirt (and apparently even his socks and pants) were also 100% cotton. He also had a second shirt at the ready should he want to change it throughout the day.

Emerald & Jade Flowers // Bristol Wedding Florist // Top Tips for getting married on a hot day

In hindsight, I probably should have opted for a much lighter dress… one of my bridesmaids offered in all seriousness to “fan us up our skirts” should we get too hot. We laughed it off at first but did follow through her request in the end!

Shoes

As a follow on from the above, make sure you plan shoes. I wore my heels for the ceremony but as soon as we got to the wedding venue for the Reception, my trusty Havaianas came on!

Why not extend this to your guests, by offering them a pair to change into to allow them to carry on dancing whilst giving their feet some respite.

Makeup

Good makeup should be able to withstand the heat. I am lucky to have a very talented friend, who did my makeup exactly as I wanted it, and it still looked great at the end of the day. Gettting personal recommendations from people you know is always a great way to start, or ask some of your wedding suppliers. It’s a small world in the industry, and suppliers are always happy to recommend other suppliers they know and trust.

Timings

This may not be possible, depending where you are in your wedding planning and where you getting married, but choosing what time you get married can make a big difference, as it will be cooler in the evenings.

If getting married abroad, in all likelihood, the wedding ceremony will take place later than we are used to in the UK. The French tend to get married in the late afternoon, followed by dinner around 8, and then literally dance the night away until the early hours of the morning. We moved everything forward to make it more in line with the UK hours, as we had a lot of families and children at our wedding. But it did mean that I had everyone walking to the Mairie in the great heat of the day…. (sorry guys!).

Emerald & Jade Flowers // Bristol Wedding Florist // Top Tips for getting married on a hot day

Be Flexible

Don’t feel you have to follow a strict timeline. Go with the flow, and see how the day takes you. For example, on our wedding, we told parents that we were happy for kids to run around and do their thing. This encouraged the adults to be more relaxed, and in between courses in the meal people wondered in and out for fresh air.

My bridesmaids also had beautiful, heavy petticoats as part of their outfits. But after the ceremony and the official photos, they were simply to warm for them to wear so ended up in a big heap in the bathroom!

Your Flowers

Remember that, as much as your florist has carefully conditioned and prepared the flowers, if it is a hot day, some flowers will cope better than others. Buttonholes in particular are likely to feel the strain as once prepared, they are therefore out of water, and when they’ve been crushed all day in hugs too…. well it might be a long day for them!

Some flowers will fare better than others. I had mostly eucalyptus and wax flower for my own wedding, which lasted beautifully and made the house smell incredible afterwards!

Emerald & Jade Flowers // Bristol Wedding Florist // Top Tips for getting married on a hot day

For your bouquet, and those of your bridesmaids, either bring some vases to the venue, or else ask your florist if you can hire some from them. I hire out vases for a nominal fee, and suggest using them as an additional arrangement either on the tables, or lined up on a mantelpiece for example. This gives your flowers a chance to have a good drink (remember to add water to the vases, just a little, for it to sit below the ribbon on your bouquet).

Your florist will of course do the most they can to make sure the flowers last as long as possible for you, but the above definitely helps.

So there you go, my top tips for getting married in the hot weather. Which one is your favourite? If you have any additional tips, let us know in the comments below! And if you know anyone getting married either abroad or in Summer, why not share this post with them!

Top 5 Wedding Venues in Bristol

Find my top 5 wedding venues in Bristol below. Bristol is such a beautiful, vibrant city, with so much to offer! I am going to be running a little series on my favourite wedding suppliers in Bristol and its’ surrounging areas, to help you along with your wedding planning.

In the first of this series: wedding venues! Pretty much the first thing you will need to consider when wedding planning, as once you have the venue, everything then goes from there. Indeed, once you book the wedding venue, the wedding date gets confirmed. You can then look to book other suppliers. It also helps set the theme a little, as the decor & style of the venue will help you decide what suppliers to choose in terms of style.

So here goes, in no particular order, my current top 5 wedding venues in Bristol:

Paintworks

Paintworks Events Space is such a great blank canvas, mixing industrial and modern. I have attended wedding fairs there with Chosen Wedding in the past, worked on a photoshoot there as well as worked on weddings there too. It is also close to the City centre and easy to get to. With a great photographer on board, they can really capture the surroundings beautifully for you. I’ve seen photos from Noel Deasington and worked with Through the Woods We Ran on my above mentioned photoshoot, and I absolutely love how they captured this venue!

Berwick Lodge

Berwick Lodge is a gorgeous little hidden gem. Really easy to get to, yet tucked away you could drive past it without knowing it’s there, perfect for that little bit of privacy for your wedding day. With beautiful buildings, rooms on site and beautiful gardens, I love working there. I was there on a grey day in January for this photoshoot and the weather didn’t dampen the luxurious feel of it. It was also beautiful on Melissa & Jamie’s Autumn wedding.Emerald & Jade Flowers - Top 5 Wedding Venues in Bristol

Arnos Vale

I happen to live quite close to Arnos Vale, and I remember the first time I saw that they did weddings. I thought it a little odd as I mostly know it as a cemetery. Which is silly really, as churches will more often than not have a graveyard surrounding the church, so it’s no different really. Except that it is. It’s so much more. Arnos Vale is surrounded by beautiful woods, as well as really grand buildings. They also offer a Twilight Woodland Wedding package, which is beautiful. The food is provided by their onsite kitchen: Kate’s Kitchen which is really good (they also do great cakes and lunches during the day!).

You can also see beautiful photos of Arnos Vale from a recent Beauty & The Beast Inspired photoshoot that took place there earlier this year.

Folly Farm

I first discovered Folly Farm when I was looking at wedding venues for my sister’s wedding. I loved it straight away, and had we gotten married in the UK, it was on our list of potential venues. With onsite accomodation, stunning views all round and situated on a nature reserve, I love it. It also has a huge kitchen you can use whilst you celebrate your wedding over a whole weekend. It is also child friendly with lots for them to explore.

A Spring Workshop on a Boat

Emerald & Jade Flowers - Bristol Workshop www.emeraldandjadeflowers.com

Last week we celebrated the return of Spring (yay!) and what better way to celebrate than a workshop teaching a lovely group how to make their very own Spring hand-tied Bouquet. The workshop took place at the Floating Harbour Studios, which is a boat, or more specifically, a converted 1905 steel dutch barge moored in an enviable secluded spot on the water in the heart of the city. A perfect location for a twilight workshop!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Emerald & Jade Flowers

Happy New Year everyone!

If you’re like me, you might feel as though 2017 has been going on for a long time already, and when people ask you about Christmas you wonder why they’re asking you about something that happened so long ago! Funny how time can go so quickly, yet we are only in mid January…

Emerald & Jade Flowers - Bristol Wedding Florist // Modern City Wedding with a Vintage Vibe - photography by http://www.bristolcontemporaryphotography.com/

My intention was always to write a blog post at the end of 2016… It was a great year for Emerald & Jade Flowers, and I am incredibly grateful for everyone who helped support my business, from all the amazing clients I had, friends and family who recommended me to everyone around them, the incredible suppliers I’ve met and worked with… Working in an office as a lawyer seems like a long, long time ago (which I guess in a way, it was). Becoming a Regional Finalist for The Wedding Industry Awards was an amazing cherry to go on top all of that!

Emerald & Jade Flowers // Beautiful Bright Photoshoot

Being self-employed, means I am lucky to work when and how I want, which is simply amazing especially when working around two little ones. My eldest turned 6 just before Christmas, and I am so grateful to be able to work around her and her brother, and I am also grateful for my clients who happily let me take them to consultations with me at times were I couldn’t leave them at home.

Emerald & Jade Flowers

2016 was a very big year for me, and for Emerald & Jade Flowers. But I am equally excited about 2017. For the time being, I have decided to focus mainly on Wedding Flowers. As I work from home, I take on a limited amount of weddings each year, so that I can give my full attention to each couple for their big day. From the consultation until even after the big day, I remain available to all my clients for any queries they may have concerning their flowers and their wedding. 2017 is looking busy already but I do still have some free dates, so don’t hesitate to get in touch to book a consultation here.

I also have some exciting ideas to go alongside the flowers, so keep your eyes peeled for more info!

Most of all, 2017 will be the year I continue to explore ways to live a beautiful life. Which is also what Emerald & Jade Flowers is all about. In line with this, I am working on an incredible giveaway for Mothers’ Day, along with some amazing Bristol suppliers. Details will be announced via Instagram so make sure you follow me so you don’t miss out.

I am also working to host a variety of workshops and I am currently looking into various venue options in Bristol to host these. If you would like to take part in a workshop, or if you have a space that would feel would be perfect for such an event, please do get in touch 🙂

So here’s to another year filled with flowers, beauty, and a happy, mindful life ♥

What will you be focusing on in 2017?

REAL WEDDING // Melissa + Jamie – Gorgeous Autumn Wedding

Real Wedding Emerald & Jade Flowers // www.emeraldandjadeflowers.com // photos by www.interlacephotography.co.uk

I met Melissa and Jamie through a mutual friend; they were getting married at Berwick Lodge in October and wanted to make full use of the gorgeous autumn colours available that month for their flowers and decor.

Initially, Melissa wasn’t 100% sure what she wanted, although she really liked calla lilies and lilies, especially in orange. We worked together on a Pinterest board, gathering ideas, and then I met with Melissa and Jamie to go through everything. It was during the consultation that everything came together.

For the ceremony room, I used wooden logs of various heights decorated with moss and candles, with some ferns planted in terracotta pots (which the guests then got to take home). I also decorated the pillars with some twigs and flowers to match the bouquet, just to add a little splash of colour to the beautiful ceremony room at Berwick Lodge.

The bouquets were beautiful and rich in colour, with lots of ferns as their dark green foliage really complemented the flowers. Melissa had a gorgeous bouquet, rich in colour.

The bridesmaids’ bouquets were mostly green, with some flowers for just a splash of colour against their dresses.

The buttonholes and corsages were in the same tones as Melissa’s bouquet, with Jamie’s a little different to his groomsmen.

And then there was Frank, the cutest little flower dog I ever saw 🙂

The end result was so beautiful, just the photos I saw on Facebook after the wedding looked beautiful, I love how the flowers seem to glow warmly!

REAL WEDDING – Izzi + Chris – Jenny Packham & bright flowers

2016-09-16_0026.jpg

I met Izzi and Chris at a wedding fair I did last year. They were initially due to be married next summer, but when they found out there would soon be a happy arrival, they decided to move the wedding forward. As such, when Izzi contacted me for her wedding flowers, the wedding was due to take place just over a month later. I already had a two week holiday booked in so we met just before I went and got talking flowers and planning. (more…)
